Roker Lighthouse interior October 1952 old ref number 19-2228
Picture captions: This is 77ft high Roker Lighthouse, beacon of the port of Sunderland. For 365 days it is a landmark; by night a guiding light for North Sea mariners. The house, buit with the precision of a Pyramid, is made of Aberdeen and Peterhead granit blocks to withstand the pounding seas. The lamp-house is the nerve centre of the lighthouse, for the beam it casts – by an electric bulb throught a dioptric lens – stretches 15 miles to sea. Keeper Bill Emmerson begins his daily tour of maintenance and inspection and when fished his starts on hsi walk home along the 2,880 ft pier (or 2,380 ft) to the Lighthouse Keepers’ houses.
